UI LEGAL ICON GETS CONFERRED WITH THE RANK OF SENIOR ADVOCATE OF NIGERIA (SAN)

An erudite scholar and legal icon of the University of Ibadan was among the 30 eminent Lawyers that were conferred with the prestigious title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) at the special session of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in Abuja last month. Speaking at the reception held by Prof. Bamgbose after the conferrement, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof.A.I. Olayinka who was also the Chairman at the occasion, congratulated Prof. Bamgbose on a honour well deserved. According to him, Prof. Yemisi Bamgbose’s elevation to the Inner Bar, no doubt, came as a recognition of her sterling contribution to the University of Ibadan and the Nigerian legal system. Describing his relationship with Prof. Bamgbose which spans over 30 years as in the University of Ibadan as cordial, he appreciated the honour deemed him to be the Chairman at the August occasion. Prof. Bamgbose’s career which started as Assistant Lecturer in 1987, according to him, has been illustrious, culminating in her promotion to the rank of Professor in 1991. During this period, she proved herself as an amiable person, and a mentor to many generation of students in the University. She has also contributed immensely to the academic and professional development of the Faculty of Law, in the University. At different times, Prof. Bamgbose served as Head of department, Private and Business Law, Sub-Dean, Faculty of Law, Acting and Assistant Warden, Queen Elizabeth II Hall, and a 2-term Dean of the Faculty of Law. Prof. Bamgbose is also the Director of the Women’s Law Clinic in the University of Ibadan, a legal clinic established in 2007 to provide free legal services to indigent student, while also training and engaging the services of Law students and staff clinician for hands on experience. She also initiated and facilitated the “What next Programme” for final year students (2010-2014), among so many of her other immense contributions. The Legal luminary is also an elected member of the University of Ibadan Council, where her opinion is much sought after and held in high esteem. Described as a dedicated, diligent and committed Academic, the Vice Chancellor stated that but for Prof. Bamgbose’s untiring efforts and leadership, many of the academic staff of the Faculty of Law would not be holding doctoral degree today. According to him, this contribution of hers, contributed in no small measure towards the UI Law programme being able to secure full accreditation status from both the NUC and the Council of Legal Education. In the light of the numerous contribution of this quintessential icon to the University of Ibadan, The Vice Chancellor expressed his delight at the honour bestowed on Prof. Bamgbose, and by extension, the University of Ibadan, especially coming at a time when the University is commemorating its 70th Anniversary.
